English is an important part of the curriculum and here in St Mac Dara’s we strive to develop an appreciation of the richness of the English language through the study of a wide range of texts and disciplines.  In this way we aim to spark the creative imagination within every child and instil an ability to express themselves clearly with confidence.

In the Junior Cycle, students will engage with texts such as Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” or “The Merchant of Venice”, Harper Lee’s classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” and O’Casey’s Dublin plays.  There is a wide range of poetry, both Irish and International, contemporary and classic, opened up for critical analysis.  Students will develop rounded communicative skills (oral, aural and written) which will enhance their ability to express themselves in various genres and modes thus enriching their life experience.

At Senior Cycle students build on what they have learned in the previous three years adding skills of critical literacy and analysis.  They engage with texts such as Shakespeare’s tragedies, chosen novels and film and a variety of prescribed and un-prescribed poems.  While the Leaving Certificate is paramount, we aim to instil a love of literature in all its forms.  Students’ written work will come to reflect a variety of audiences, registers and forms which will nourish their creativity and prepare them for the academic and intellectual requirements of adult life.

Aiding the curricular objectives above, students will experience an abundance of out of classroom practical learning through theatre, cinema, debating, reviewing and competitions all aimed at reinforcing the foundations provided above.
