St. Mac Daras Parents Association

The Education Act 1998 makes provision to allow parents of students of a school to set up a Parents Association. The Act states that:

The parents of students of a recognised school may establish and maintain from among their number, a parents’ association for the school and membership of that association shall be open to all parents of students of that school.

The parents association in a school works with the principal, staff and board of management to build effective co-operation and partnership between home and school.

The role of the parent’s association is set down in the Education Act 1998 as follows:
A parents association shall promote the interests of the students in a school in co-operation with the board, principal, teachers and students.

All parents of students attending St Mac Darsa Community College are members of the Parents Association. The Parents Association have committee meetings on a monthly basis during the school year, usually on the first Monday of the month. The Parents Association holds its AGM every October.

The Parents Association committee are all volunteers who work together with the school to promote and encourage our children’s development within the school environment.

Every year the Parents Association is involved in organising and supporting a number of events in the school, including organising Brennans Group Insurance cover for students, raising funds for the school through the voluntary Parents Association subscription, and other initiatives such as the annual Fun Quiz. The Parents Association also hosts Coffee Mornings for parents of 1st year students on their first day in school, and also provides hospitality at such events as the 1st Year Parents evening, the 6th year Graduation and Awards ceremony, and the November mass for the deceased.

The Parents Association also organises guest speakers for the AGM and during the year.

The Parents Association has supported the school in funding many worthwhile projects over the years that benefit the students, and will continue to do so into the future with the continued support of the parents.

The Parents Association can be contacted on matters relating the Parents Association at [email protected] or by writing to the school.
